Issey Miyake Pleats Please: Removing Heavy Soiling Without Losing the Pleats
Heat-set pleating cannot be ironed back once it is gone. That decides everything about how the garment is handled.
What came in
A pair of pale green Pleats Please wide-leg trousers with dark soiling smeared across the front, from the waist down over the thigh and into the hem. It was ground in rather than sitting on the surface, and it had gone into the fold lines rather than only across them.
Why the pleats decide everything
Pleats Please pleating is heat-set into polyester after the garment has been cut and sewn. The pleats are not pressed in at a shop and they cannot be pressed back. They are the shape the fibre was permanently deformed into, and heat is what set them, so heat is also what releases them. Issey Miyake’s own care guidance tells owners to keep these garments away from tumble drying, ironing and steaming for that reason, and away from dry cleaning as well. So the constraint is settled before anything else is, and the stain work has to fit inside it. Get that order wrong and the trousers come back clean and flat, which on this construction is not something anyone can repair.
The work
The requirement was easy to state and easy to get wrong: shift heavy, ground-in soiling without letting heat or cross-pleat pressure anywhere near the set. The soiling came out and the pleats came back the shape they went in.
The honest note
Heavy ground-in soiling on a pale garment is not always fully recoverable, and on this construction there is no fallback. The aggressive options that might shift a stubborn mark are the same ones that would flatten the pleats, so the work stops well short of them. That is the trade, and it is worth knowing before a garment is left with anyone. If your Pleats Please has already been pressed or tumble dried and the pleats have relaxed, that is usually not something a cleaner can reverse. This pair responded well. Like every case here, it is a record of one garment, not a promise about the next. A note on the photographs: they are working records from the shop, taken on the day at whatever bench or rail was free, so the light and the background change between frames. Nothing has been colour-corrected, lightened or retouched.

Frequently asked
Can you dry clean Issey Miyake Pleats Please?
Issey Miyake’s own care guidance says not to. The pleating is heat-set into polyester and is not heat-resistant, so the brand directs owners away from dry cleaning, tumble drying, ironing and steaming, and towards a cool wash and flat drying in the direction of the pleats. Check the label on your own piece before deciding, because the guidance follows the construction rather than the fibre alone.
How do you clean Pleats Please without losing the pleats?
By keeping heat and cross-pleat pressure out of every stage, not only out of the cleaning itself. Soiling is worked along the fold lines instead of across them, nothing is pressed or steamed, and the garment is dried in the direction of the pleats rather than tumbled. The pleating constraint is settled first and the stain work is fitted inside it, which is the opposite of how an ordinary garment is approached.
Can flattened pleats be restored on a Pleats Please garment?
Light creasing from sitting or folding often relaxes out: mist the garment with water, reshape it along the pleats and leave it to dry flat. Pleats flattened by an iron, a steamer or a tumble dryer are a different matter, because the heat has released the set the fibre was formed into, and no cleaner can press that back. This is why the care guidance is as strict as it is.
Can heavy dirt be removed from pleated polyester?
The pleating sets the limits. The pleats are set by heat, and the treatments that shift a stubborn ground-in mark tend to involve heat or mechanical pressure, which is exactly what the pleats cannot take. On these trousers the soiling cleared and the pleating held. Another pair needs its own assessment.
Where can I get Issey Miyake Pleats Please cleaned in Singapore?
Rosabelle Launderette takes pleated and heat-set garments in Singapore, Pleats Please included, and assesses each piece before quoting rather than pricing it off a list. Bring it to one of our shops or book a pickup, and we will tell you what we think is achievable before any work starts, including when the honest answer is to leave a mark alone. Whoever you use in Singapore, ask them how they intend to handle the pleats before you leave the garment, because a cleaner who has not met this construction before will reach for heat.
Is stain removal ever guaranteed?
No. Fibre, construction, dye and how long the soiling has been in the cloth all decide what is possible, and on a pleated garment the construction puts a hard ceiling on the methods available. We would rather tell you before the garment is left that a mark may not come out fully than return it clean and reshaped into something else.
