Removing Sunscreen Stains From a White Polyester T-Shirt in Singapore

A white polyester T-shirt came in with brown and orange-brown sunscreen stains across the front, the back and the sleeves. All the stains came out.

This page records what happened to this T-shirt, not an outcome to expect from every garment.

What came in?

A white short-sleeved T-shirt in an open polyester mesh knit, printed on the front and the back. Brown and orange-brown blotches were spread over the lower front, the lower back and both sleeves, with smaller spots caught in the mesh near the hem. The marks were from sunscreen.

Why does sunscreen turn white clothes orange or brown?

Many sunscreens use avobenzone as a UV filter. When avobenzone left in fabric meets iron and other metals carried in wash water, the mark turns yellow and then orange-brown, as described in a published patent on removing sunscreen stains. The oils and creams that carry the sunscreen also hold dust and skin oil, which darkens the marks. Polyester attracts oily residue, so sunscreen marks on a polyester shirt tend to stay after a home wash.

What did the work have to achieve?

Both the residue and the colour out

The oily residue and the orange-brown colour are separate problems. Lifting the residue alone can leave the colour behind as a pale stain, so both had to come out of the knit evenly across the front, the back and the sleeves.

The print left as it was

Printed graphics can crack, lift or bleed when treatment reaches them. The stains sat close to the print on both sides, so the work had to stop at its edge.

How do you keep sunscreen off white clothes?

  • Let sunscreen soak in for several minutes before dressing, so less of it transfers to the fabric.
  • Keep a sunscreen-marked garment out of the dryer, and do not keep rewashing it. Each wash can deepen the colour, and heat can set the mark.

For stains of every kind, see stain removal, and for a T-shirt with a different kind of mark, dried glue of an unknown type on a cotton T-shirt.

About these photographs

These are working shop records. The before frames were taken flat on the table when the T-shirt arrived and the after frames on a hanger when the work was finished, under different light. Nothing was colour-corrected. The three close views are not of the same spot: the before views show a sleeve and the mesh near the hem, the after view shows the front. The print on the front, the print on the back and the neck label have been blurred in every photograph to protect the customer's privacy.

The honest note

Can sunscreen stains always be removed from clothes?

Not always. We do our best, but many factors will affect the outcome. Complete removal is possible on some garments but cannot be guaranteed. How many times the garment has been washed since, what was tried at home, the sunscreen itself, the fibre and any print all change the work. Each garment is assessed before any work starts.

Common questions

Questions about sunscreen stains on clothes

Why does sunscreen leave orange or brown stains on white clothes?

Many sunscreens use avobenzone as a UV filter. Avobenzone left in fabric reacts with iron and other metals carried in wash water, and the marks it leaves turn yellow and then orange-brown. The oils and creams that carry the sunscreen also hold on to dust and skin oil, which darkens the marks further. On this white polyester T-shirt the stains were brown and orange-brown blotches across the front, the back and the sleeves.

Can sunscreen stains be removed from a polyester T-shirt?

Sunscreen leaves an oily residue that polyester holds on to, and a mark that has already reacted with metals in wash water carries colour of its own, so both the residue and the colour have to be lifted, not just washed over. On this white polyester T-shirt all the sunscreen stains came out. How many times the shirt has been washed since, what was tried at home, the sunscreen itself and the print on the garment all change the work, and each garment is assessed before any work starts. Complete removal is possible on some garments but cannot be guaranteed.

Should I wash a sunscreen-stained shirt again before bringing it in?

No. Each wash in water that carries iron can take the reaction further and deepen the colour, and heat from a dryer or an iron can set the mark into the fibre. Keep the garment out of the dryer, and tell us what has been tried on it.

How much does stain removal cost in Singapore?

At Rosabelle, standard stain treatment is included in the normal cleaning price for most items. Heavy or specialist stain work is typically from $100 upwards, depending on the fibre, the stain and how much treatment it needs. It is quoted after a free assessment at Orchard or Queenstown and confirmed with you before any work starts.
