Removing Yellow Spots From a Chanel Wool and Silk Jacket After Storage in Singapore

A cream Chanel jacket in wool and silk came out of four years in storage, unworn, with yellow spots across the front, around the pockets and along the back. The spots lifted, and the cut, the raised pattern, the braid and the silk lining were unchanged.

This page records what happened to this jacket, not an outcome to expect from every garment.

What came in?

The customer had not worn the jacket for four years. When it came out of storage, small yellow spots were scattered across the front panels, gathered along the edges of the patch pockets and ran either side of the centre back seam. The cloth is woven with a raised pattern of interlocking Cs, the edges are finished in a braided trim, and the jacket is lined in silk.

The label rules out washing and calls for professional dry cleaning only.

Why does a jacket get yellow spots in storage?

Spots that appear while a garment hangs unworn usually start with something left in the cloth when it was put away: perspiration, skin oil, perfume, or a small splash of food or drink. Most of these cannot be seen at the time. Over months and years they oxidise and turn yellow, and once they have bonded to the fibre they have to be lifted out of it. We do not know what was on this jacket when it was put away.

How did Rosabelle restore the Chanel jacket?

The structure came first

A tailored jacket holds its shape through its cut, its interlining and its seams. The work on the spots was chosen so that none of these would move, and so that the raised pattern would not flatten.

Each material considered on its own

Wool, silk, polyamide, the braided trim and the silk lining each react differently to the same treatment. The spots were lifted from the cloth with the method appropriate for these fibres, as the label permits.

What was the result?

The yellow spots lifted from the front, the pockets and the back. The jacket kept its shape, the raised pattern stands as it did, and the braid, the buttons and the silk lining are unchanged.

How do you stop a jacket yellowing in storage?

  • Have it cleaned before it goes into storage, even after a single wear, so nothing is left in the cloth to oxidise.
  • If it will stay unworn for a long time, have it cleaned periodically while it is stored.
  • Keep it somewhere with low humidity. In Singapore a closed wardrobe stays humid unless something is drawing the moisture out.
  • Keep it out of sunlight.

About these photographs

These are working shop records. The before frames were taken when the jacket arrived and the after frames the following day, in the same place but under different light. Nothing was colour-corrected, and this page makes no claim about the colour of the cloth, only about the spots. The three photographs of the finished jacket were taken later, against a plain wall in even light. They are not set beside a before frame, because the light and the background differ from the day it arrived.

The honest note

Can yellow spots always be removed from a stored jacket?

Not always. We do our best, but many factors will affect the outcome. Complete removal is possible on some garments but cannot be guaranteed. What caused the spots, how long they have been there, the fibre and what has been tried at home all change the work. Each garment is assessed before any work starts.

Common questions

Questions about yellow spots on stored jackets

Why does a wool and silk jacket get yellow spots in storage?

Spots that appear on a garment while it hangs unworn usually start with something left in the cloth when it was put away, such as perspiration, skin oil, perfume or a small splash of food or drink. These are often invisible at first and darken as they oxidise over months and years. Heat, light and humidity speed that up, and wool and silk are among the fibres most sensitive to them. This cream Chanel jacket came out of four years in storage with yellow spots across the front, around the pockets and along the back seam.

Can yellow spots be removed from a Chanel jacket?

Yellow spots from storage are residues that have oxidised and bonded to the fibre, so they have to be lifted out of the cloth rather than washed off, and on a structured jacket the work cannot disturb the cut, the interlining or the trim. On this Chanel wool and silk jacket the spots lifted, and the shape, the raised pattern, the braid and the silk lining were unchanged. How long the marks have been there, what caused them, the fibre and what has been tried at home all change the work, and each garment is assessed before any work starts. Complete removal is possible on some garments but cannot be guaranteed.

Can a Chanel jacket be dry cleaned in Singapore?

The care label on this jacket says it must not be washed and should be dry cleaned by a professional only, with a gentle cycle. The cloth is 64% wool, 19% silk and 17% polyamide with a 100% silk lining, so it went through our specialist garment care rather than ordinary dry cleaning. We follow the label for each piece and assess the trims, buttons and lining before any work starts.

How do you stop clothes yellowing in storage in Singapore?

Have the garment cleaned before it goes into storage, even if it was worn only once, so nothing is left in the cloth to oxidise. If it will stay unworn for a long time, have it cleaned periodically while it is stored. Keep it somewhere dry and out of sunlight. Singapore's relative humidity averages around 82 per cent, so a closed wardrobe stays humid unless something is drawing the moisture out.

How much does it cost to remove yellow spots from a designer jacket in Singapore?

At Rosabelle Launderette, specialist stain work and restoration is typically from $100 upwards, because the cause, the age of the marks and the construction of the garment differ too much between pieces for a published rate. Each piece is assessed and the price agreed before any work starts. Garments are collected from homes anywhere in Singapore or can be dropped off at our Queenstown and Orchard shops.
