Hermès Leather Bomber Jacket: Cleaning Lambskin, Cotton and Silk
A Hermès bomber jacket in for cleaning at our Singapore workshop: lambskin sleeves, a cotton body, a silk-blend rib, four embroidery threads, and a care label that allows one method only.
Nine materials in one jacket
The composition label runs to three panels. The body is cotton with polyamide and a little polyurethane. The sleeves, the shoulder yokes and the harness-motif appliqué down the left sleeve are lambskin. The collar, cuffs and hem are a rib knit that is 44% silk. The wadding between shell and lining is polyester, and the embroidery alone uses four separate threads: polyester for one, a half-acrylic half-wool blend for another, cotton for a third, viscose for the fourth. That is nine materials, before the metal snaps down the front and the two drawcord toggles at the waist.
Each one answers to cleaning differently. Solvent lifts oily soiling out of cotton, and strips the oils and surface finish out of lambskin. Water clears water-borne marks from the cotton but swells the hide next to it. Alkaline cleaners dull the silk rib, which also stretches while it is wet. The viscose embroidery thread is at its weakest wet, and the acrylic-wool thread felts under heat and agitation. No single process suits all nine, so the whole jacket is worked to the tolerance of its least tolerant part, which here is the lambskin. That is what the label means by cleaning by a leather specialist only.
The work
The jacket came in with white marks across the lambskin sleeves and shoulder panels, and on the cotton below them. White marks on dark leather usually come from storage rather than wear: salts drawn out of the hide, oils and waxes migrating to the surface, or the beginnings of mould. A wardrobe in Singapore produces all three.
We covered the hardware first, as the label asks, then worked the marks by hand, panel by panel: spotting the cotton without letting anything run onto the leather beside it, cleaning the lambskin as skin and conditioning it afterwards to replace what cleaning takes out, keeping the ribs clear of both and drying them in shape. We finished the jacket by hand rather than under a press, which would have flattened the raised embroidery across the back and glazed the leather. The marks came off the leather and the cotton.
Cleaning a Hermès jacket in Singapore
Every leather piece is assessed before we quote, because tanning, age and previous treatments decide what a hide will take. Guide pricing is $160 for a leather jacket, confirmed after inspection, and leather work generally runs two weeks and upwards rather than the five working days an ordinary garment takes. Restoration runs longer again, typically three weeks and up. We give you a timeline at drop-off. You can leave a piece at Queenstown or Orchard, or book an island-wide pickup. The last Hermès jacket in this journal was a full shearling, one skin carrying leather on one face and wool on the other.
The honest note
The photographs on this page were taken at intake, before any work. We did not shoot a second set before the jacket went back to its owner, so there is no after picture here. What we can tell you is that the marks came out of the lambskin and the cotton, and that the rib, the embroidery and the hide went home intact.
We quote a mixed-material piece after assessing it, not off a price list, because the most fragile component sets the work. Not every mark comes out, either. A dye lifted by a solvent spill leaves a shadow, and mould that has reached into the grain leaves damage no stain removal reverses. We will tell you which of those you have before we start.

Frequently asked
Can you dry clean a jacket that is part leather and part fabric?
Not as an ordinary dry clean. A mixed leather-and-fabric jacket has to be cleaned to the tolerance of its least tolerant part, which is almost always the leather: solvent strips the oils and surface finish out of a hide, and water swells and stiffens it, while the fabric panels beside it need one or the other to come clean. It is handled as leather work instead, with the hardware protected, the marks treated by hand area by area and the hide conditioned afterwards, rather than run through a machine cycle.
What does "cleaning by a leather specialist only" mean on a care label?
It means the maker will not stand behind an ordinary dry clean, and the garment should go to a cleaner who treats leather as skin rather than as fabric: cleaning, spotting, conditioning and refinishing by hand. This Hermès bomber jacket carries that instruction because its sleeves and shoulder yokes are lambskin, which is thin, soft and easily marked. A conventional dry-cleaning cycle would dry those panels out and leave them stiff and patchy.
What causes white marks on a black leather jacket?
Usually storage rather than wear. Salts drawn out of the hide, oils and waxes migrating to the surface as a fatty bloom, and the beginnings of mould all appear as a chalky white film on dark leather, and a wardrobe in Singapore is warm and humid enough for all three. They sit on or just under the surface, so a specialist can usually remove them, though the hide needs conditioning afterwards to replace what comes away with them.
Can silk trim be cleaned on the same garment as leather?
Yes, but the silk sets limits of its own. The collar, cuffs and hem of this Hermès jacket are a rib knit that is 44% silk, which is sensitive to alkaline cleaners, quick to lose lustre, and easy to pull out of shape while wet. It has to be kept clear of what is used on the leather and cotton beside it, worked drier than those panels, and dried in shape rather than left hanging.
Where can I get a Hermès jacket cleaned in Singapore?
Rosabelle Launderette cleans Hermès leather, shearling and mixed-material garments at its own workshop in Singapore, and has done specialist garment work since 1998. You can drop a piece at Queenstown, 163 Stirling Road, or at Orchard, Far East Shopping Centre, or book an island-wide pickup. Every leather piece is assessed before we quote, because tanning, age and condition decide what a hide will take.
How much does it cost to clean a Hermès leather jacket in Singapore?
Guide pricing at Rosabelle is $160 for a leather jacket, confirmed after inspection. A mixed-material piece like this Hermès bomber is priced as leather work, because the hide sets what the whole garment can take, and heavy mould, exotic hides or colour restoration can carry additional charges that we confirm before starting. Leather cleaning generally takes two weeks and upwards, and restoration work three weeks and up. We give you a timeline at drop-off.
Should a leather jacket be cleaned before storing it in Singapore?
Yes. Perspiration salts, body oils and dust left in a hide feed mould and oxidise over time, and a Singapore wardrobe stays warm and humid all year, so a jacket put away dirty comes out worse than it went in. Cleaning and conditioning it before storage, then airing it occasionally, prevents most of the white bloom and stiffening that leather is brought to us for.
Can a jacket with both leather and fabric panels be cleaned?
Yes, but it has to be cleaned as one piece, by whichever component is most restrictive, which is almost always the leather. A mixed-material jacket cannot be split between a leather process and a garment process, because cleaning the halves separately leaves a visible difference in tone and hand where they meet. This Hermès bomber combined lambskin sleeves, a cotton body, a silk-blend rib, and four embroidery threads under a label permitting a leather specialist only. Rosabelle in Singapore prices mixed-material pieces after inspection; published leather guide prices start at $160 for a jacket, and leather work runs two weeks and upwards.
